Most people think installing epoxy is just painting the floor. It’s not. And that’s why the good jobs last 15 years and the bad ones last two.
Epoxy installation is more like surgery than painting. What happens before the coating goes on matters just as much as the coating itself.
First, there’s prep. Real prep. Not just sweeping. The surface has to be cleaned, degreased, and ground down. That’s what opens the pores of the concrete so the epoxy can bond. If that step’s skipped or rushed, the floor will peel.
Then comes repair. Cracks get filled. Holes get patched. Moisture levels get tested. Epoxy won’t forgive you if the foundation isn’t ready.
After that, the base coat goes down. This is the actual epoxy. It soaks into the concrete, locks in place, and starts curing. Sometimes flakes get broadcast on top—those add texture and make the floor look finished.
Last step is the topcoat. Usually a clear, UV-stable sealer. It protects the color, keeps the shine, and makes cleanup easy.
Then you wait. Most floors are walkable within a day. Cars take two or three. The full cure takes longer, but you don’t have to wait that long to enjoy it.
The whole process takes about 2–3 days. Longer if it’s humid or the floor needs serious prep. But it’s worth doing right.
People think the magic’s in the epoxy. It’s not. It’s in the process.
